About Us
Water Information Management System (WIMS)
Background Information
The Water Information Management System (WIMS) – Puntland is a pioneering initiative launched in 2022 and successfully completed in 2025. Developed to strengthen water governance in the Puntland region of Somalia, WIMS provides a centralized platform for collecting, managing, and sharing water-related data. By integrating modern technology with local needs, the system enhances transparency, supports evidence-based decision-making, and empowers communities to sustainably manage their water resources.
WIMS was designed to address challenges such as water scarcity, climate variability, and fragmented data systems. Today, it stands as a cornerstone for Puntland’s efforts to ensure equitable access to water, improve resilience, and foster socio-economic development.
Our Mission & Vision
Mission
WIMS supports sustainable water resource management by providing a single platform for monitoring water sources, quality, and rehabilitation across regions. We aim to improve decision-making and accountability so that communities have access to safe, reliable water.
The system is used by government agencies, partners, and stakeholders to track water infrastructure, assess quality, plan rehabilitation, and report on projects in a transparent way.
Vision
A future where every community has access to safe, sustainable water through data-driven planning, transparent monitoring, and accountable management. WIMS aims to be the trusted platform that enables governments and partners to prioritize investments, track outcomes, and ensure no one is left without reliable water.
What We Do
Water Source Data
We maintain a central database of water sources—boreholes, wells, springs, and other points—with location, status, beneficiaries, and management information.
Water Quality Monitoring
We track water quality test results—pH, turbidity, fluoride, TDS, and other parameters—to support safe drinking water and compliance with standards.
Rehabilitation & Improvement
We support planning and tracking of water source rehabilitation—from non-functioning or abandoned sources to improved or new infrastructure.
Why Water Source Management Matters
Reliable water sources are essential for health, livelihoods, and development. When water points fail or quality drops, communities face increased disease risk, lost time fetching water, and lower agricultural productivity. By mapping sources, monitoring quality, and prioritizing rehabilitation, WIMS helps ensure that investments and maintenance are targeted where they are needed most.
- Improve planning and budgeting for water infrastructure
- Identify non-functioning or at-risk sources for rehabilitation
- Monitor water quality trends and compliance
- Support reporting to donors, government, and the public
- Enable evidence-based decisions for new and upgraded water systems
WIMS is developed and used in partnership with government water authorities, UNICEF, and other stakeholders to strengthen water sector monitoring and accountability. For access to the full system or data, please contact your designated administrator.
